Zilpha "Jane" Hoy

Zilpha "Jane" (Brown) Hoy, 73, of Southington passed away Sunday Aug. 22, 2010 at Branford Hospice. She was the wife of the late Harold Joseph Hoy for nearly 50 years.

Jane was born Oct. 27, 1936 in Pittsfield, MA to the late Lemuel Thomas Brown and Sara (Dillon) Brown. Before settling in Plantsville for 39 years, she and Hal lived in Fredericksburg, VA, Elkins, WV, Marietta, OH, Niantic, CT and spent their summers in Pine Grove, PA.

Mrs. Hoy was raised and educated in Cheshire, MA where she was a member of the Baptist Church. A graduate of Northeastern University, Boston, MA, she was selected for the first class of the New Teacher Internship Program and received her Masters in Education from CCSU. Jane was a pre-school teacher at Plantsville Nursery School and a certified teacher at South End Elementary School in Southington for 25 1/2 years, retiring in 2001. She taught 3rd grade, 4th grade, and completed her career as a 1st grade teacher. Her most prized achievement was teaching children to read. She was also a member of the Plantsville Congregational Church, Frederica Chapter, Eastern Star and Hannah Woodruff Chapter, D.A.R.. and on the Advisory Board of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls when her daughters were active. Jane will be remembered for her love of birds, compassion for children and value of education.

She is survived by 4 daughters: Kathryn Burgess and her husband Jeff of Tucson, Arizona; Lisa Wermuth and her husband Doug of Mequon, Wisconsin; Suzanne M. Hoy (Wong) and her husband James Wong of Southington; and Kristen Shugrue and her husband Robert of Milford, CT; She also leaves behind 7 granddaughters, 4 grandsons, 7 nieces and 6 nephews. In addition to her husband Hal, she was predeceased by 2 brothers; Warren T. Brown and Charles Brown and 2 sisters; Ellen Miseveth and Marion Roan.

A funeral service will be held on Monday August 30, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville, CT. Burial will follow in South End Cemetery, Southington. Calling hours are Sunday August 29, 2010 from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
