Zigmund S. Stanowski

Zigmund “Zig” “Ziggy” S. Stanowski, 91, of Southington and former longtime resident of East Berlin, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025. He was the loving husband of Barbara (Marek) Stanowski for nearly 67 years. 

Zig was born on December 9, 1933 in New Britain, one of eight children, to the late Zigmund and Yvonne (Gariepy) Stanowski. He graduated from New Britain High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Ziggy worked as a manager of First National Stores and then took a position at UCONN Health Center, retiring after many years of service. He was a longtime parishioner at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Kensington and a member of the American Legion Post 68 in Berlin. Zig spent many summers with Barbara at their camp at Sun Valley Beach Club in Stafford Springs. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. 

In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by three sons, Kevin Stanowski, Jeffery Stanowski, both of Southington, and Mark Stanowski of East Berlin and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sons, Michael and Richard Stanowski and seven siblings; Irene Frost, Jaqueline Ciezynski, Helen Picard, Frank Stanowski, Robert Stanowski, Raymond Stanowski and Adele Arroyo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, 485 Alling St., Kensington. Please meet directly at church. Burial with military honors will be held privately at Wilcox Cemetery, East Berlin. Calling hours will be held from 5 – 7 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025 at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S.
