Sophie G. Makarewicz

Sophie G. Makarewicz, 104, of New Britain and former longtime Waterbury resident, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 10, 2023 at Monsignor Bojanowski Manor in New Britain.

Sophie was born on July 3, 1918 in Waterbury to the late John and Anna (Kwasnick) Makarewicz.

She graduated from Wilby High School and was a longtime member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Waterbury. She worked at Scoville Manufacturing for many years and enjoyed baking, especially her delicious gingersnaps. Sophie became a member of the St. Lucian’s Residence in New Britain where she made many wonderful friends, eventually moving to the Monsignor Bojanowski Manor where she would spend her final years.

Sophie is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families, including Carol Frechette, Robert Rembish and Thomas Rembish, all of Southington. She was predeceased by 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sophie’s memory may be made to the St. Lucian’s Residence, 532 Burritt St., New Britain, CT 06053.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at the Immaculate Conception Church, 130 Summer St., Southington. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury.  Plantsville Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements.
