Rose S. Galayda

Rose S. (Babinetz) Galayda, 93, formerly of Southington, CT, died peacefully while surrounded by her family at her winter residence in Inverness, FL on Dec. 25, 2012. She was predeceased by her husband Michael P. Galayda in 1999 and her son Paul Galayda in 1966.

She was born in Southington, CT on May 15, 1919. She was one of six children of the late Rudolph and Katherine (Oplustil) Babinetz. She supported Michael's efforts while he served in the U.S. Army during WWII and they married in 1945. They settled in Southington and spent several decades in the community where they raised a family. Rose was a communicant and parishioner of St. Thomas Church. She, Michael, and other families established the Southington Association for Retarded Children (SARC). She supported Michael's efforts as the first president of SARC with many years of volunteering. During later decades, she volunteered extensive time with the Bradley Memorial Hospital thrift store which provided low cost items for families in need of assistance. Her concern and thoughtfulness for persons less fortunate continue to inspire many others to volunteer.

Several years ago, Mrs. Galayda decided to commute between her summer residence in Dublin, OH and her winter residence in Inverness, FL.

She is survived by two of her three children: James Galayda and his wife Linda of Inverness FL; Mike Galayda and his wife Anndrea of Dublin, OH. She is also survived by her beloved grandson, Phil Galayda of Columbus, OH, to whom she was a nurturing and doting grandmother.
