Richard L. Blum Sr., 75, of Southington, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on Sunday October 25, 2015. He was the loving husband of Dorothy (Hamel) Blum for 50 years.
Born on February 8, 1940 in Bristol to the late Rudolph and Wanda (Westfall) Blum, he was raised in Bristol and had been a longtime Southington resident.
Richard proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1964 where he studied engineering at UC Berkeley. Richard was a skilled tool and die maker and in 1979, he formed Action Tool Company that he owned and operated with his wife until his retirement in 2013. Richard thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved working in his yard and garden, woodworking and fishing.
In addition to his wife Dorothy, Richard is survived by his sons: James Blum of Meriden and Richard L. Blum Jr. and his wife Tracy Sommo Blum of Wallingford and his twin daughters; Valerie Whiting of Cape Cod, MA and Melanie Perez and her husband Joe of MA and 6 grandchildren: Sarah, Lauren, and Zachary Blum, Alyssa Whiting and Rhianna and Kyla Perez. He also leaves behind his extended family, including his brothers and sisters in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Kathleen Barie.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2015 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 382 Hope Hill Rd., Yalesville. Full military honors will immediately follow. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville.
