Michael "Mickey" Kurtz, 90, of Southington, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Middlesex Hospital. He had been the loving husband of Ruth (Yeske) Kurtz for 60 years.
Born in Southington on October, 27, 1924 to the late Peter and Mary (Timos) Kurtz, he had been a lifelong Southington resident.
Michael proudly served his country in the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant during WWII, being wounded three times and earning one Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters and one Bronze Star Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster. Michael was a past council member at the Zion Lutheran Church in Southington. He was one of the founding members of the Southington Sportsmen's Association, a past Sachem for Southington Wonx Tribe #28 and a member of the Great Council of CT. He was recognized by the Great Council of the United States Improved Order of Red Men for 50 years of membership. He was also active in the American Legion Post 72, the VFW, the Polish Falcons Nest 307, the Southington Grange No. 25, and the Disabled American Veterans Association. Michael was a proud member of the American Dahlia Society. He hybridized two award-winning dahlia cultivars. Gardening was his lifelong passion.
In addition to his wife Ruth, Michael is survived by his son Peter Kurtz and his wife Deb of Southington and his son Matthew Kurtz and his wife Sara of Addison, VT; three grandchildren: Rachael and Leah Kurtz of Southington and Jessica Chyinski of HI; a special cousin and "flower girl" Cindy Miller and her husband Robert of Southington and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Anna Dean.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at the Zion Lutheran Church, 531 Woodruff St., Southington.
