Mary Derynioski

Mary Adams Derynioski, 95, of Southington died on Saturday, August 26, at the Hospital of Central Connecticut, New Britain, surrounded by loving family. She was the widow of Joseph R. Derynioski

She was born in Groton, CT on May 27, 1922, the daughter of the late Leslie E. Adams, Sr. and Evelyn (Sylvia) Adams. The family later moved to Southington, where Mary was a lifelong resident.

An original “Rosie the Riveter”, her family thinks of her as a trailblazer for women’s rights, as she worked full time to help provide for her family at a time when most women were strictly homemakers. Starting in 1941, she worked at Marlin Rockwell in Plainville, followed by Forestville Industrial Plating, Beaton and Corbin Manufacturing Co. and lastly at Pegasus Manufacturing Co. She reluctantly retired at age 76.

Most who knew her will remember her for her kind and generous spirit, always giving unselfishly to friends, family and strangers alike. It would not be unusual for her to befriend someone in need at the grocery store and give them a lift home with their groceries or show up while you were at work to mow your lawn. She enjoyed traveling, making many trips to Germany, Austria, and Denmark, but was happiest when she was on the go around town with her family.

Mary was devoted to her family and is survived by her children, Jane Papp of W. Barnstable, MA and Rosanne Zanetti of Southington.  She leaves her grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Porter and husband Lawrence of Southington and Michael Zanetti and wife Nora of London, Ontario. Her two precious great-grandchildren are Thomas Zanetti and Benjamin Porter. In addition, she is survived by her brother John Adams and wife Diane, sisters-in-law Barbara Adams, Florence Mirando, Wanda Mirando, Esther Derynioski and MaryAnn Derynioski.  She was predeceased by her dear sister Marjorie and brothers Leslie E. Adams, Jr. and Horace Adams. She leaves many nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to recognize and thank the nursing staff at HOCC Floor 5C and the Hospice and Care Coordinators for their wonderful care and compassion for Mary and her family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at the Plantsville Congregational Church, Plantsville. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Southington. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, from 4-7 p.m. at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville. For online expressions of sympathy, please visit www.PlantsvilleFuneralHome.com.
