Joyce (Baker) Nell, 89, of Southington passed away peacefully on Sunday Jan. 20, 2013 at Masonicare in Wallingford. She had been the loving wife of the late Donald O. Nell for 52 years.
Born June 10, 1923 in Bedford, Ohio to the late Orin and Eva (Lindbergh) Baker, she was a longtime Southington resident.
Joyce graduated from Timken High School in Canton, OH and went on to the Aultman School of Nursing in Canton. She then worked as a nurse at Ohio State University before enlisting in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps where she served in the Korean War in Osaka, Japan.
After returning home, she attended Boston University, graduating in 1955 with her BSN. Joyce worked many years at Bradley Memorial Hospital in the ER and the Maternity Ward. She worked as a private nurse for the Barnes Family in Southington. Joyce was a dedicated volunteer at the American Red Cross, acting as the History Head Nurse and was responsible for training all of the volunteer nurses.
Mrs. Nell was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Southington, active as a deaconess and a member of the Women's Club.
She is survived by her son Scott Nell of Avon, her daughter Barbara (Nell) Kanner and her husband Hal of Cheshire, her grandson Austin Kanner and her brother Albert Baker of AZ.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joyce's memory may be made to the Masonicare Home Health and Hospice, 33 North Plains Industrial Rd. Wallingford, 06492.
