Joseph A. Giammatteo, 84, of Marion passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday May 4, 2013 at his home. He had been the loving husband of Teresa (Ciotti) Giammatteo for 60 years.
Joseph was born June 15, 1928 in Southington. He was the youngest of eight children, born to the late Joseph and Lucy (Feola) Giammatteo. As a lifelong Southington resident, Joseph owned and operated Southington Oil Company with his brothers and sisters from the 1950s until his retirement in 1993. He was a veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his wife Teresa, he is survived by three sons: Paul and wife Martha of Southbury, John and wife Katey of Middlefield, and Thomas and wife Sharon of Bloomfield. He is survived by seven grandchildren: Anne Giammatteo Whitfield and husband Sean of Alexandria, Va, John Harland Giammatteo of Southbury, Hope Giammatteo and Eric Giammatteo, both of Middlefield, Nim Weiselfish and wife Jen of Hong Kong, Ayelet Connell-Giammatteo and husband Matthew of Bloomfield, and Amir Horowitz and wife Andrea of Palo Alto, Ca, and six great-grandchildren.
He also leaves behind his brother Carmen Giammatteo and his sister Hope Coletto, both of Southington, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers Nicholas, Marco, Rocco and Domenic Giammatteo, and sisters Henrietta Sgrillo and Sabina Zaino, formerly all of Southington.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday May 11, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St., Plantsville. The family will receive family and friends before the Mass from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Plantsville Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements.
