Jean Kong

Jean Kong, 67, of Plainville, wife of James Kong, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, August 4, 2016, following an illness that she faced with much dignity and strength.

Born in China on December 13, 1948, she was the only child to the late Chow Tung Chun and Hom Hing Gwong. After moving to the U.S. at age 11, she resided in Newington, where she graduated high school, and went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from St. Joseph College in West Hartford. Jean and James settled in Plainville where they raised their three children, and owned and operated the Great Wall restaurant downtown for 10 years. Jean went on to work for the Hartford Insurance Company for the next 23 years, after which she retired. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother to her five adored grandchildren. She will also be remembered for her love for reading, gardening, previously working part time at the Plainville Public Library, and cheering on the UCONN women's basketball team.

In addition to her husband, James, she leaves her son, Colin and his wife, Grace; her daughters, Erin and her husband, Gerald and Kelly and her husband, Adam; her five grandchildren, Christian, Emelia, Geoffrey, Andrew, and Emily; her extended family and many friends.

A memorial Mass in celebration of Jean's life will be held on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Broad St, Plainville. Committal services will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, New Britain. Family and friends may gather at the church prior to the Mass, from 11-11:30 a.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, Jean's love for reading may be remembered with contribution to the Plainville Public Library, 56 E. Main St., Plainville, CT 06062.
