Helen Rita Torneo

Helen Rita (Sazanowicz) Torneo passed away peacefully on Friday January 20, 2012 in Fort Myers, Florida. She was the loving wife of the late Paul Torneo.

Born in Plantsville on November 26, 1919 to the late Antoni and Karolina (Supragon) Sazanowicz, she had been a longtime Southington resident before moving to Florida in 2001.

Helen was a graduate of Saint Francis Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1941. She was a Registered Nurse and worked for several years as a nurse in the Hartford area. She retired in 1984 from Bradley Memorial Hospital after 28 years of service. Helen was instrumental in forming the Nurses Union (Local 1199) where she served a term as President. She also was a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Church, the Rosary Society and the Immaculata Women's Club, also serving as President of each Club.

Helen is survived by daughter, Lucille & Richard Gendron of Fort Myers, FL; daughter Cindy Hicks of Sarasota, FL and son Paul Torneo of Southington, CT; sister-in-law Irene Sazanowicz of Plantsville, CT and sister Elizabeth Conner of California; seven grandchildren: Ron Gendron, Jeff Gendron, Mary Nardoza, Paul Torneo Jr., Carissa Paolino and Samantha and Trevor Hicks and three great-grandchildren: Eric and Matthew Nardoza and Nina Gendron. She was predeceased by brothers Joseph, Stanley and Captain Anthony Sazanowicz, retired Air Force, and sisters Mary Renna and Rita and Sophie Sazanowicz.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 28, 2012 at 9:30a.m.from Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville with a Funeral Mass at 10:30a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church, 130 Summer St., Plantsville. Burial will follow in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Southington.
