Helen ( Smyka) Davich, 96, died peacefully on Wednesday February 2, 2011 at HCC at Bradley Memorial. She was the beloved wife of the late John Devich for nearly 40 years.
Born on September 21, 1914 in New Britain to the late Andrew and Josephine (Mulka) Smyka, she had been a lifelong Southington resident.
Helen worked as a nurses aide for 18 years at the former Woodmere in Southington. She was a loyal parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church, an active member of the Immaculata Women's Club, Holy Rosary Society, St. Cecile Choir, P.N.A. and the Calendar House. She also enjoyed spending time with the Seniors at the YMCA.
Keeping busy for others made Helen a happy person. She crocheted until her fingers could do no more and gave away all that she made. Sharing a meal was always important, even if it was all that she had. It satisfied her to see others smile in her presence. Simple things were her pleasure, a foot long hot dog or a drive to see the leaves, it made no difference. She was always happy.
She is survived by her daughter Carol Volpe of Southington, her son Robert Devich and his wife Susan of Virginia, her granddaughter Andrea Smith and her husband Scott of Southington, her grandson Jonathan Devich and his wife Paula of Arizona, her great-granddaughter Allison Sargunas of Meriden, and many nieces and nephews. She held dear her lifelong friends, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Albrycht of Plantsville. She was predeceased by 2 sisters and 1 brother: Genevieve Wirsul, Eleanor Filipowski, and Walter Smyka.
