Harold William Slater; Poppie, 89, of Southington, CT passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday September 3, 2011. He was surrounded by his loved ones in the home that he happily and lovingly shared with his son Hal and daughter-in-law Missy and their three children: Liza, Sarah and Dan. He fought a brief but dignified and courageous battle against cancer.
Harold was born, the oldest of 3 sons, on May 15, 1922 in New Britain, CT to the late Harold and Caroline (Herwig) Slater. He met the love of his life; Lydia Jane Wilkinson, while stationed in New Orleans serving the US Navy Armed Guard during World War II. After a very a brief courtship they were married on September 11, 1945.
Harold was the Marketing Manager for The Stanley Steel division of The Stanley Works, retiring in 1986 after 35 years of service.
Harold Poppie was a loved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend that truly opened his heart to everyone and always put family first.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife of 57 years Lydia Jane Slater and also his oldest daughter Barbara Slater Carter, formerly of Old Orchard Beach, Maine. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen Slater Scott and her husband Robert of Bluffton, SC and his son Harold Daniel Hal' Slater and his wife Melissa Wright Missy Slater of Southington, CT with whom he happily resided with for the past 17 years. Poppie also leaves behind five cherished grand-children: Kimberly Scott Mischik of Bluffton, SC, Robert Austin Scott and his wife Mandy of Bluffton, SC, Elizabeth Jane Liza Kemish and her husband Matthew of Bristol, CT, Sarah Mead Slater and Daniel Wright Slater of Southington, CT; and six great-grandchildren: Austin, Brady, Laney and Dane Scott; Trace and Dylan Mischik all of Bluffton, SC; a special brother Robert Joseph Slater, for whom he always held the greatest respect, and his son-in-law, Wesley Carter of Old Orchard Beach, ME. He was pre-deceased by a brother Walter Slater of Plainville, CT. He also leaves behind his special extended family; 'the Wright Family, who opened their hearts and their homes to him and shared many wonderful trips, holidays and family functions together.
Harold's greatest joy in life was his family. It gave him great pleasure to watch his grandchildren grow into adulthood and to share in their joys, their sorrows and their accomplishments. Poppie also enjoyed spending many hours staying on top of the latest technology and staying connected with the world through his computer.
He enjoyed his plants; growing tomatoes, nurturing his fig trees but most of all feeding the birds and making sure that the bluebirds had a heated bird bath to visit in the winter.

In honor of his request, the family has been asked to combine Harold's ashes with the ashes of his Janie so that they can be reunited in eternal love. A private memorial service for the immediate family will take place on September 11, 2011, which would have been their 66th wedding anniversary.

With their compassion and support the family was able to help Poppie through his journey.
