George P. Griffin, 88, of Southington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015 at St. Mary's Hospital in Waterbury. He had been the loving husband of Rose Myrtle (Hanson) Griffin for 64 years.
Born May 13, 1926 in Waterbury to the late George and Margaret (Crowe) Griffin, he had been a Southington resident for 80 years.
George was a Merchant Marine Veteran in WWII. He was President of Griffin Construction Inc. in Milldale for 30 years. George was very active in many Southington town committees such as the Southington Building Committee, Democratic Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce. He was Chairman of the Building Committee for Joseph DePaolo Middle School and helped build many of the schools in Southington.
He had been a senior member of the Rotary Club in Southington for many years. George loved nature, especially the ocean. He was an avid sailor, earning his Captain's License and was a member of the Power Squadron in Meriden. He was an accomplished carpenter and woodworker.
In addition to his wife Rose, he is survived by his son David P. Griffin and his wife Deborah of Danvers, MA; son Patrick Griffin and his wife Denise Rose of Southington; daughter Susan A. Griffin of Southington; son Terrance J. Griffin and Judy Germano of Wolcott and daughter Cynthia Griffin of Plantsville. He was the loving grandfather to ten grandchildren: Ben Flis, Becky Ballard, Philein Griffin, Tory Griffin, Shawn Griffin, Jasmine Folan, TJ Griffin, Hattie Griffin, Nena Carlson, Corinna Carlson and 21 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his siblings, Robert, Jane, Patricia, Gerald, Paul, Frank, Maura and Kathleen Griffin.
