Elizabeth "Betty" (Baum) Stoddard, 98, passed peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, July 28, 2012 in Southington, CT.
She was born in Rosebud, PA the daughter of the late Fredric C. and Pauline (Kuhl) Baum. Betty was a graduate of Holyoke High School and Holyoke Hospital School of Nursing in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Betty resided in West Hartford for many years where she was an active member of the First Baptist Church, the P.T.A., and was a Cub Scout Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader. She was a past Matron of Storer Chapter Order of Eastern Star and Charter Advisory Board Member of the West Hartford Assembly Order of Rainbow for Girls. She received the Grand Cross of Color and 50 year honor with the OES. In 1961, the family moved to Eastham, Cape Cod Massachusetts where she joined the Eastham Methodist Church and was a longtime choir member and was a president of the WSCS. Mrs. Stoddard was an avid gardener and loved to read. Since moving to Southington, she had been a member of the Grace United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her four children: Marian Stoddard and her husband David Bareiss of AZ; Katherine Stoddard Altemus of Southington, CT; David Stoddard of ME; Melissa Stoddard Lafko and her husband Dennis of FL; daughter-in-law Colleen Stoddard of CA; son-in-law Robert Cole of Madison, CT; two step-children: Caryl Altemus of IL and Pamala Altemus Brndjar and her husband Rev. Paul Brndjar of PA: twelve grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, ten step-great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years Leon F. Stoddard, her second husband of 20 years Charles S. Altemus Sr., three children: Leon F. Stoddard Jr., Leon B. Stoddard, Ruth Stoddard Cole and a son-in-law/step-son, Charles S. Altemus Jr.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday August 18, 2012 at the Grace United Methodist Church, 121 Pleasant St. Southington, CT. Internment to follow in the Church's Memory Garden.
