Dorothy H. Blum

Dorothy “Dot” (Hamel) Blum, 83, of Shrewsbury, MA and formerly of Southington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 after a brief battle with cancer during which time she was taken care of by her daughters. She was the loving wife of the late Richard L. Blum Sr. for 50 years.

Born on February 12, 1938, in Bristol to the late Wilfred and Arthemise (Giroux) Hamel, she had been a longtime Southington resident before moving to the Residence at Orchard Grove in Shrewsbury, MA.

Dorothy co-owned and operated Action Tool Company with her husband until their retirement in 2013. She loved working in her garden and being outdoors, enjoying the birds and animals in their backyard. She also enjoyed going on multiple cruises with her husband and, most recently, playing Bingo with her friends at Orchard Grove. Dot was also known for her secret fudge recipe. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her sons, James Blum of Ansonia and Richard L. Blum Jr, and his wife, Tracy Sommo Blum of Wallingford; and her twin daughters, Valerie Whiting of Cape Cod, MA and Melanie Perez and her husband Joe of Massachusetts and six grandchildren; Sarah, Lauren, and Zachary Blum, Alyssa Whiting and Rhianna and Kyla Perez. She also leaves behind her sister, Florence Scott Jacobs of New Jersey and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband Rit, she was predeceased by 2 sisters, Janet Pierce and Rita Czajkowski.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 (https://donate3.cancer.org/).
