Donald E. Whitmore Jr., 87, of Southington, passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at HOCC at New Britain. He had been the loving husband of Mary (Austin) Whitmore for 58 years.
Donald was born on April 7, 1935 in Springfield, MA to the late Donald E. Sr. and I. Louise (Douglas) Whitmore.
Donald graduated from the American International College in Springfield, MA and earned his MBA at UCONN. He was the Executive Vice-President and CFO of the Eastern Company in Naugatuck, retiring after over 30 years of service. Don was active in many professional associations and Board of Directors throughout the Waterbury area, including Waterbury Hospital and Naugatuck Savings Bank.
Donald was an avid traveler, golfer and loved to ski. He participated in gourmet cooking clubs and enjoyed watching sports, rooting for his favorite teams, UCONN, the NY Giants, the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. Donald looked forward to spending his winters in Fort Myers, FL with Mary, where they made lasting friendships. They also enjoyed singing together and were members of the Southington Festival Chorale and the Prospectors. Donald loved his family and enjoyed their time in Newport and Cape Cod. He also liked to attend his grandchildren’s sports games and recitals.
Donald is survived by his daughters, Mary Lou Bonfitto and her husband Michael of Westfield, MA, Susan Spatafore and her husband Dan of Southington, son, Don Whitmore and his wife Laural of Wayland, MA and 7 grandchildren; Daniel and Alicia Spatafore, Maria, Rachel and Julia Bonfitto and Noelle and Russell Whitmore and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Shirley Mullaly, Ruth Zamb, Beverly Seline Parker and Richard Whitmore.
Donald’s family would like to thank the entire staff at MidState Medical Center and both the Critical Care Unit and Hospice Care from HOCC at New Britain for their compassion and the excellent care they provided.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Donald’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at 9:00 a.m. from the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St, Plantsville with a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Aloysius Church, 254 Burritt St, Plantsville. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington.
