Donald J. Stevens,79, of Southington passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday October 7, 2011 at HCC at New Britain General. He was the loving husband of Norma (Skridulis) Stevens for 54 years.
Donald was born on August 25, 1932 in Richford, VT. He was a Southington resident for over 70 years. He was predeceased by his father John Donald Stevens, his step-father, Lincoln Lumbra and his mother Hazel (Brooks) Stevens Lumbra.
In addition to his wife Norma, he is survived by his 3 children: Don Stevens Jr. of Cheshire, Joe Stevens and wife Laurie of Southington, and Sue Raymond of Southington; 7 grandchildren: Kyle and DJ Stevens, Jarod and Brigid Stevens, and Ryan, Joshua, and Daniel Raymond; 1 great-granddaughter, Aliviah Raymond; 3 brothers: Ferris Stevens and his wife MaryAnn of Southington, Newton Stevens and his wife Mary of Southington, and Gordon Lumbra of Bristol; his sister-in-law Carol Lumbra of Southington and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Frank Lumbra.
Donald served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He was the founder and owner of Don Stevens Tire Company in Southington for 50 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 72 in Southington and a proud sponsor of the American Legion Post 72 Baseball Team.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday October 12, 2011 at 10:30am at St. Thomas Church, 99 Bristol St., Southington. Burial with full military honors will follow in St. Thomas Cemetery, Southington. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday October 11, 2011 from 4-7pm at the Plantsville Funeral Home, 975 S. Main St., Plantsville.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Don's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
