Bernard John Flynn, 82, of Southington, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at Mid-State Medical Center in Meriden. He died peacefully after a long illness surrounded by his loving family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Frances Flynn.
"Bernie" was born in Hartford, on November 5, 1931, son of the late Mary E. (Welch) Flynn and John Flynn. He was raised and lived most of his life in Southington. He attended Lewis High School and was a proud veteran of the Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was the administrator of Flynn's Home for the Aged in Milldale prior to his retirement. He was known to enjoy lively political discussions, old movies, and handicapping thoroughbred horse racing. Among his heroes were John Wayne and Ronald Reagan. Always the life of the party, Bernie was happiest when loved ones were gathered together. Irish to the core, family values and unwaivering faith shaped his character.
He leaves six children; Kathleen (Flynn) Gleeson of California, Maureen (Flynn) Hayes-Smith and her husband Joe, of Southington; Bernard M. Flynn of Southington; Eileen Hawkins and her husband, Dr. Craig Hawkins, of Maine; Peggy Flynn of Rhode Island and Erin Flynn of Westbrook and his niece Sharyn Murphy of Southington; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family.
Bernie will also be missed by numerous friends and his cat "Peaches," who now occupies his side of the bed! His life was enriched by the wisdom and humor of Paul and Sandy Margentino of New Britain and the lifelong loyalty of Eddie Hatch of Waterbury. Together with Martha Hull of Southington, he remained an involved and loving parent to their six children. Additionally, he was predeceased by his brother Justin (Red) Flynn and his sister Margaret Murphy; a granddaughter, Corp. Breanna Joy Hayes U.S.M.C, and his nephews, Bill Martin and Shawn Murphy.
